Things to Do in Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer, also known as the Golden City of Rajasthan, is often overlooked by most people traveling through this state. But those who do go all the way to the West find themselves in one of the most beautiful places to visit in entire Rajasthan. Jaisalmer is right next to the Pakistan border and the climate can be pretty unforgiving at times with temperatures rising up to 45°C. But this gem of a city should be on everyone’s radar! Go on sunset tour through the vast Thar desert, relax in the comforts of an authentic havelli or sip some tea on a roof top terrace overlooking the city. There are so many unique and epic things to do in Jaisalmer and I guarantee that you’ll immediately fall in love with this city!

Boating in the Gadisar Lake
The Gadisar Lake is a man-made reservoir built in 1367 by Maharawal Gadsi Singh, after whom it has been named. This stately tank served as Jaisalmer’s vital water supply until 1965. Since it was so important and vital to the people of Jaisalmer, small temples and shrines were built around it that exist to date. The Tilon-ki-Pol gateway that lines the road to the lake was said to be constructed by a famous prostitute of that area. Fearing that the Maharawal would tear it down, considering it to be beneath his dignity, she added a Krishna temple on the top. Also, Jaisalmer hotel bookings need to be made in advance as the place is a popular tourist attraction.

Sam Sand Dunes
Located at a distance of 41kms from the main city of Jaisalmer, these silky sand dunes are one of the most popular excursions from the city. They are spread over an area of 2 km and form one of the most beautiful sights that can be seen by human eyes. From late afternoon until the evening, the atmosphere of the place suddenly changes. It ceases to be a beautiful, lonely place, rather it turns into a big extravagant carnival with food, fun, and frolic all around. If you want to immerse yourself in a complete desert experience, stay in one of the several tent resorts near the dunes.

Camel Safari
This is the iconic activity of Jaisalmer. Ride a camel into the bright desert as you appreciate the landform. The scorching desert, magical sand Narnia and most importantly the exotic camel ride make this experience one-of-a-kind. You can also opt for camel safari through any architectural marvels, markets and others. The price of the camel ride starts from INR 2000. The price of the safari changes based on the location of the safari and season. Top places to enjoy safari are desert safari camp, real desert man camel safari, mystic camel safari, Jaisalmer camel safari and others.

Dune Bashing
If you have now got a perfect taste of the adventure then try dune bashing as well. The Thar Desert makes it a perfect playground for dune bashing where you will be exploring the desert in an SUV. You can be all relaxed as this is done under strict professional supervision as dune bashing and off-roading may include sharp overturn and competent manoeuvring skills. If you have back problems then strictly avoid this activity.
